A Bit of History
Of the things most travelers associate with Texas - oil, cattle, wheeler-dealers, independent nation status - they all started in Nacogdoches. No one can write a history of Texas without Nacogdoches. Today, Nacogdoches is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Texas. People come here to discover the town’s historic past and to enjoy its slow-paced and relaxing atmosphere. Numerous landmarks and museums pay tribute to the town’s historic past. The city is also home to Stephen F. Austin State University.
The “Oldest Town in Texas”, was named for the Caddo family of Indians who once lived in the area. Nacogdoches remained a Caddo settlement until 1716 when Spain established a mission here. For more than a hundred years this town was major eastern gateway to Texas. The city is often referred to as the “Cradle of Texas Liberty”. The town offers visitors insight into the fight for Texas independence. The Old Stone Fort that housed the dreams of Texas Libertarians still stands today. While six flags have flown over Texas, nine flags, have flown over Nacogdoches: Spanish, French, Mexican, Magee-Gutierrez Republic, Long Republic, Fredonia Republic, Lone Star, Confederate and United States.

Nacogdoches has a variety of things to see and do. Visitors can tour the historic sites, take a self-guided walking tour, stroll through the SFA Mast Arboretum, Ruby M. Mize Azalea Garden, or Lanana Creek Trail. Nacogdoches also has over 50 restaurants and specialty shops. The antique and specialty shops line the brick streets of historic downtown.
Nacogdoches has major festivals and events as well.
